How Are They Made: Wire Forms for Construction Equipment

Wire Forms  |  May 15, 2018

Have you ever looked at a piece of intricately bent wire and thought to yourself, “Just how did they do that?”

At Master Spring, we realize that most people don’t spend much time thinking about how wire forms for power tools and hand tools are made – But this certainly doesn’t make their design any less complicated, or fascinating. As with most of our designs, wire forms follow a detailed manufacturing process, one that requires special attention to exacting precision and tight tolerances.

wireform_power_tools_hand_tools_constructionFor example, take a look at this threaded utility hook for construction hand tools. To the novice, it may look like a piece of bent wire. But in reality, manufacturing this wire utility hook involved the careful orchestration of a precise multi-step process – a process that included, machining, chamfering, threading, heat treating and packaging.

Here is a quick look at just a couple of the steps involved in creating this wire form:

  • Wire is fed through the machine to the bending head
  • The teeth, or swage, are then formed by passing the wire through a form
  • A three head machining unit is then used to cut and roll the wire to the proper length and diameter
  • The bending head then takes over, which ultimately gives the threaded utility hook its shape

All in all, manufacturing this wire form requires exacting precision and a close attention to detail. While most people may not spend much time thinking about how they are made, we think the process is fascinating, and definitely worth taking a closer look.
